A Smart Decision? Smart Meters, the facts
'Smart meters' will allow energy use to be monitored remotely by both energy companies and by consumers.
By making consumers aware of how much energy they are using and how much they save through conservation efforts, it will help consumers reduce their household energy bill and carbon footprint.
They would remove the need for meter readers, estimated bills, are energy-use related call-centre queries, saving utility companies a significant amount in operating costs, and also reducing the carbon footprint such activities generate.
Although it will cost a total of £7bn to install in every British home, it is claimed the scheme will cut household energy use by 2%, which will reduce CO2 emissions by 2.6m tonnes. It will hopefully save consumers around £20 every year after costs.
It will encourage people to curb their energy consumption even further. There will be more interaction between consumers and energy companies through the meters, which will keep them informed of latest developments and products that may help them.
The scheme will put us ahead of the EU's deadline of having every home on the continent connected via a smart meter by 2023.
