A Basic Human Right
Water is absolutely essential to human life as we use water in nearly all areas of our lives. The international community has recognised the importance of this basic substance as being fundamental to our basic human rights.
The importance to conserve water was highlighted by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008 when he called for the human "right to water," an idea based on the dignity of the human person and not simply an "economic good". It is now widely considered that our right to an adequate standard of living can not be realized without a secure access to water.
When we consider that of the world's 6 billion people, at least 1.1 billion lack access to safe drinking-water and 2.4 billion live without access to sanitation systems, it is easy to see how much work still needs to be done.
