A Matter for the EU
The European Union considers the conservation of our fresh and salt water ecosystems and of the water we drink of great importance. Global temperatures are continuing to rise, bringing changes in weather patterns, rising sea levels and more extreme weather such as storms, droughts and floods. As a result we have witnessed the climate place more stress on infrastructure and on eco-systems.
The European Union has recognised the importance of adapting to climate change, and this concept is being integrated into all relevant EU policies and will feature prominently in the Union's external policies to assist those countries most affected.
In April 2009, the EU published The White Paper which reveals Europe's most vulnerable regions. These include; Southern Europe, the Mediterranean Basin and the Arctic. But it also highlights specific problems such as mountainous areas (in particular the Alps), islands, coastal and urban areas, and densely populated floodplains.
