Drought Doubts
Water is often taken for granted in the UK, and is seen by many as an unlimited resource. Even after nearly two years of drought in the South East of England there was a continuous supply of water from our taps. In reality, however, these dry winters had a massive impact on our water supplies and restrictions on non-essential uses of water were necessary to maintain a supply of water to our taps! DEFRA claim a third dry winter could have caused serious problems in some areas.
The Environmental Agency has a webpage where you can find out about the current water status in the UK.
Water is not as abundant in England and Wales as you would think. We only have 1,334 cubic meters (m3) per person a year – much less than France (3,065 m3) or even the hotter Mediterranean countries of Italy (2,785 m3) and Spain (2,775 m3).
